First Responders
Merrimac Fire & Rescue added their first trained First Responders in 1979. First Responders are medically trained personnel ready to respond to medical emergencies. All of our crew are licensed through the state after completing 60 hours of training and required to recertify every two years. All Merrimac First Responders are taught the basics of emergency medical care and are able to treat life-threatening problems prior to the arrival of the ambulance.  As First Responders we do not transport. Many in the community may not know that we also have the ability to do water and ice rescue.

Fire Department
Merrimac Fire & Rescue is made up of 25 dedicated men and women from the community.  These volunteers train and prepare to respond to all types of emergencies in the Merrimac Fire District, including structure fires, wildland fires, car accidents, water rescue, and weather emergencies.  In the early days we responded to these calls with 1 truck and personal protective equipment that consisted of little more than rain coats and rubber boots.  Now we have 8 trucks and wear state of the art bunker gear and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.  We have specialized equipment like jaws of life, thermal imaging camera, cold water rescue suits, and so much more.  Through it all it is the support of the community that makes what we do possible .  From the community members who come from all walks of life and dedicate themselves to respond at anytime to someones emergency to the financial support that provides us with the training and equipment that allows us to do our jobs safely and effectively.  Thank you.
