Volunteers Serving you Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow..........

Since 1952 Merrimac Fire and Rescue has been dedicated to preserving and protecting life and property in the Merrimac area.  Thirty plus unique men and women from a wide variety of backgrounds work together to provide our area with quality fire and rescue service.  What makes these people stand out is their pride in volunteering and their dedication to their community.  All of the members are volunteers with careers and families, and they have chosen to devote their spare time to your safety.

YESTERDAY

The Merrimac Volunteer Fire Department, now called Merrimac Fire and Rescue, was organized in 1952 by a group of men who saw the need for fire protection in the Village of Merrimac and surrounding area.  Before 1952 fire protection was primarily provided by the Baraboo Volunteer Fire Department and supplemented by Sauk City and Portage Volunteer Fire Departments. The Merrimac Volunteer Fire Department was a private organization operated by its members.  It contracted its services with the Village of Merrimac and the towns of Merrimac and Caledonia.  In 1964, the towns and the village formed the Merrimac Fire District Commission.  The commission manages the financial obligations of the Merrimac Fire District.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Today, Merrimac Fire and Rescue is still a private organization that is operated by its members and provide fire and rescue service to the Merrimac Area Fire Protection District.  The fire department has chosen to be very involved in our community over the years, even though it isn't required.  The fire department strives to achieve unity among all the residents in the fire district by viewing the village and towns as a community, rather than three separate entities.  The fire department feels by taking a leadership role in local activities they can help make our community stronger by bringing people together.

Merrimac Fire and Rescue holds many different fund raisers, thru out the year, to generate funds that are used to support local youth groups, community projects, and to purchase equipment to enhance fire fighting and rescue capabilities.  Merrimac Fire and Rescue has helped the community by making improvements to the village parks, helping purchase flags and street decoration, coordination of a Memorial Service Parade and holding a fire safety program at the Merrimac Elementary School during Fire Prevention Week.  The fire department works together with the Conservation Club, Vietnam Veterans, Merrimac Snowmobile Club, Merrimac Youth Organization and many others to strive for a more united community.

TODAY

It's not an easy job being a volunteer firefighter.  The call of duty may come at any time, day or night, which can cause problems when many firefighters work away from the Merrimac Area Fire Protection District.  As a result, there is always a need for members who are available during the weekdays.  It take a special kind of person to be a firefighter, willing to devote a tremendous amount of time to training and service.  There is an increasing demand to learn more to keep up with the quickly changing world of emergency service.  The fire department is able to use the wide variety of interests of its members to provide us with better and more efficient service.  It offers people the opportunity to expand their skills into specialty areas above and beyond the basic requirements to complement each person's interests and skills.  Members can specialize in: Ropes and Rescue, Emergency Medical Service, Water Rescue, Fire Prevention, Fire Inspection, Hazardous Materials, and many more!

Being a volunteer firefighter is a very rewarding experience.  You are able to work together with people as a team, depending on each other to be flexible and adaptable to respond correctly in a wide variety of situations.  There is a strong sense of belonging and camaraderie among the members of the fire department and a feeling of accomplishment.  Being a volunteer firefighter is a service to your community and gives one a feeling of community pride.

TOMORROW

As Merrimac Fire and Rescue looks ahead to the future they see opportunity.  The opportunity to maintain a goal of quality fire and rescue service.  Today's and tomorrow's members make a commitment to continuing education and training so they can respond to all situations that may arise with expertise and skill.  Merrimac Fire and Rescue has always strived to be progressive and commits itself to you.
